Statistics have shown that most people suffer from one form of mental illness or another. One of the most common mental health conditions is anxiety. While it is common to have some form of fear once in a while, people suffering from major anxiety experience worse symptoms. In such an instance, the condition can interfere with your daily life, including work, school and relationships.

Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety is characterized by extreme fear. For most people, it is normal to experience fear before certain events, for example, a long journey, or before making a public speech. Studies show that anxiety may be triggered by sleep issues, or other stress-related factors. Just like other mental health conditions like depression, someone may be at a higher risk of being diagnosed with anxiety due to genetics.

Someone who suffers from anxiety may have an extreme physical reaction to the source of their anxiety. Some people suffering from the condition also experience other symptoms, including weight loss and sleep disorders like insomnia. Such people also develop behavioral and emotional symptoms due to the stressor. Anxiety, just like depression, may lead to impairment of academic, social and even professional aspects of the patient’s life.

Ways of Treating Anxiety

While most people suffering from anxiety tend to face stigma and isolate themselves, the good news is that the condition can be treated. There are two main ways of treating anxiety – psychotherapy and supplements. Usually, patients are exposed to a combination of treatment plans. Oftentimes, they will undergo therapy, and take medication such as antidepressants.

Alternative therapy and medication is also a growing trend which some anxiety patients have found useful. Meditation and yoga are examples of treatment methods which not only keep the patient relaxed, but they also take their mind away from the source of their anxiety.
